Several school districts and parents would vote in favor of implementing a dress code into their school systems. However, other parents do not see the need to enforce something that takes away from a person’s individuality.
Supporters of the dress code claim that children would have an easier time concentrating on classroom studies if they were not distracted by what they were wearing and what other’s around them were wearing. Parents are interested in preserving a sense of morality for their children and feel that a strict dress code would keep children from wearing things that were inappropriate. They also feel that the boundaries that are set up when fashion and money tnat come into play would no longer be an issue because everyone would be dressed the same. They also feel that bullying, which has become a large issue in the past couple of years would stop being such a large concern because many things would be equalized by installing a dress code.
Parents and teachers who oppose the dress code are quick to point out that just because children are wearing the same thing does not mean that they are paying any better attention to lessons. There is no correlation between children doing well in school and dress codes. They also believe that children develop a sense of who they are through their clothes and if that is taken away from them children are unable to learn to express themselves. Many parents feel that it is up to the parents to make sure that their children are dresses appropriately before they leave the house. Children who are in school are still under their parent’s control and therefore the parents should be more interested in what their children are wearing. They are also quick to point out that a dress code does not stop children from doing immoral things. Rather, it should be the parent’s job to instill morals into their children. Issues with bullying will continue no matter if a dress code is implemented. It is up to adults to teach children to be tolerant of others.
